Lake Misurina

One of the iconic Italian ski resorts Cortina d’Ampezzo grew up almost parallel to famous St.Moritz in Austria, which actually was a model to follow for Cortina and many of other established today ski resorts in Europe. Some 160 years ago British and German travellers discovered the charm of Dolomites. The base for their hiking became the small Ladine village Cortina, which in following years, due to new road Alemagna and train connection with Venice and Milano became a popular place for multinational tourists and Austrian aristocracy. At the beginning of 20th century over a dozen modern hotels received several thousands of guests a year. Unfortunately both World Wars splashed the ink on an idyllic picture of the young resort. The military forts near Cortina that witnessed severe fights over Dolomites during the First World War are today part of ski tour Giro della Grande Guerra.

Another tour – Skitour Olympia – takes the skiers around the premises of more positive event – the Winter Olympics 1956.
The existing buildings after the Olympics were adapted for sites of local sport club activities, which means today you can still use the Olympic ski jump or play ice hockey on the ice stadium.

The flagship of ski area the black run ‘Olimpia’ traditionally hosts Women Alpine World Cup competitions every February.

The run is located on the slopes of Tofane mountain(3 244m), near the longest run in the area 7 km long Armentarola.
The Faloria range on the other side of the village offers perfect conditions for skiing, snowboarding and freeski fun.
The other resorts in the Cortina area are San Vito di Cadore, Auronzo and Misurina. The picturesque area around Lake Misurina is a popular place for snow walking, and nordic skiing.

The bus shuttle to Arabba connects Cortina with ski resorts around Sella Ronda, the other regular buses go to Civetta and Alta Pusteria,
so while in cortina you can get use the powerful skipass Dolomiti Superski covering 12 vast ski areas in Dolomites.
